The transmission has two mechanical drive ranges, and hydrostatic and mechanical power branches. A change of one of the ranges takes place in the other range at a synchronous point. The hydrostatic power branch is controlled in such a manner that no speed difference arises at a claw clutch, during the change of the ranges. The hydrostatic power branch is controlled independent of an output torque of the transmission. A disturbance observer measures the output torque using determined speed. An independent claim is also included for a method for area switching of a hydrostatic-mechanical power branching transmission.
