<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which is thinner than the conventional one. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device 50a includes an active matrix 30 and a counter substrate 20a arranged opposite to each other and a liquid crystal layer 25 disposed between the active matrix 30 and the counter substrate 20a, wherein a backlight unit 10a comprising: a light guide plate 3 for planarly emitting light from a light source 1 to the liquid crystal layer 25 side; and a selective reflection type polarizing layer 6 which has a plurality of metal lines 6b extending in parallel with one another on the liquid crystal layer 25 side of the light guide plate 3, reflects polarized light parallel to the direction where respective metal lines 6b are extended and, at the same time, transmits polarized light vertical to the direction where the respective metal lines 6b are extended is integrated on the counter substrate 20a. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
