PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a CPP-GMR element which can achieve a large MR ratio while suppressing noise and influence due to spin torque. SOLUTION: The thickness of a semiconductor layer which constitutes a spacer layer of the CPP-GMR element is set within such a range of thickness that a first non-magnetic metal layer/semiconductor layer/second non-magnetic metal layer-junction may shows a conduction characteristic between an ohmic conduction characteristic and a semiconductor conduction characteristic.
