Disclosed are systems and methods for signaling characteristics of pictur e interdependencies in a video signal in subscriber television systems. In t his regard, a representative method comprises allocating auxiliary informati on at a transport layer of a video program as to determine whether a picture is one of the following: discardable picture, forward predicted picture, a backward predicted picture, and a bi-directional predicted picture. The auxi liary information at the transport layer is generally unencrypted and transm itted as part of private data or an adaptation field. The auxiliary informat ion enables a video decoder to determine whether to drop the picture corresp onding to the auxiliary information without having to parse a video stream.< /SDOAB>
