<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical recording material using a cyanine compound, which exhibits thermal decomposition behavior suitable for high speed optical recording application and having high solubility. <P>SOLUTION: The optical recording material comprises (A) a cyanine compound expressed by formula (I) and composed of a single substance or a mixture of the isomer excluding at least one or more of the optical isomers, which make an asymmetric atom expressed in * in the formula (I) a chiral center, and (B) a solvent.
