The method involves providing body data of a three-dimensional body (100) e.g. camera housing, to be produced, and defining a layer thickness of vertical sections, which are required for production of the body by a rapid prototyping system (6). The body is segmented into a number of three-dimensional unit cells, and a cell structure is defined for the unit cells, and layer data are copied into the unit cells. Individual vertical layer data of the three-dimensional body provided with a structured body content are outputted for controlling the prototyping system. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a structure generator for providing a vertical layer data of a three-dimensional body (2) a computer readable medium comprising instructions to perform a method for generating layer data in a computer system.
