A muffler (1) for an exhaust system in a motor vehicle; the muffler (1) is provided with: a tubular body (2), which displays at least one inlet opening and one outlet opening; and a tubular tail pipe (3), which is supported by the tubular body (2), forms an extension of the outlet opening, serves to release the exhaust gases in the atmosphere, and displays a weakened and collapsible section (4), which is adapted to collapse in a controlled manner in case of crash.
