A method and a system for performing backup of a short message of a mobile phone are provided to reduce communication costs and improve a storage speed and a check speed of messages. A message repository(250) stores every information of individual short messages according to the reception time order by a short message storage application which stores short messages in an internal memory. An index repository(260) stores a caller phone number, a caller name, the number of received messages, and addresses of message storage units storing messages of each sender. A screen display unit(210) displays an operation variable which stores operation information to thus complete an operation even in case of an abnormal termination, displays a state while a short message is being stored, or searches and displays a stored short message. A controller(220) controls every operation process.
