A transfer unit using a belt driving device and an image forming apparatus using the same are provided to move a belt tension applying unit between a belt tension released position and a belt tension applying position in order to apply tension to the belt in a relaxation state without an operation of a user. An image forming apparatus comprises a develop unit, a transfer unit, and a mounting unit. The transfer unit includes multiple rollers(71,73,77), and a belt tension applying unit(80). The rollers support the belt to be rotated. The belt tension applying unit moves between a belt tension released position relaxing the belt by a first roller, and a belt tension applying position applying tension to the belt. The belt tension applying unit has a locking releasing projection(81) projected from a second roller, and a locking link(83) contacted by the locking releasing projection when the second roller rotates.
