Improvements in or relating to means for depositing films of metal on a series of plates or sheets

In a method of depositing films of metal on a series of plates or sheets by spray painting, the metal is sprayed through a series of masks cut in paper or other material of small value compared with metal, each mask being discarded at or before the stage at which the margin has become contaminated sufficiently to require cleaning. As shown, applied to an apparatus for coating a series of mica plates in succession, paper 3 is passed in step by step motion, imparted by a ratchet 16 and a friction drum 5, under a hole-punching device 25 and on to a spraying station where a mica sheet, removed from a magazine 36 in which a number are stacked, by means of a suction nozzle 38, is deposited on the aperture. Metal from an automatically-operated spray gun 35 is deposited on the exposed portion of the mica which then moves forward to a point where a second suction nozzle removes the coated sheet and transfers it to a travelling belt for further processing, e.g., heat treatment, the paper being discarded. The sequence of operations is controlled by cams operated by a continuously rotating shaft 9.
