Lubricating oil compositions

An automotive lubricating oil composition, comprises:
(A) an oil of lubricating viscosity in a major amount; and
(B) as an additive component in a minor amount, an oil-soluble or oil-dispersible 4-oxobutanoic acid having the moiety -CO(CH 2 ) 2 COOH bonded to
(i) a group OR 1 where R 1 is hydrocarbyl group having 10 to 30 carbon atoms; or
(ii) a group X being an aromatic group substituted with at least one hydrocarbyl group having 10 to 30 carbon atoms; or
(iii) a group NR 2 R 3 where one or both of R 2 and R 3 is hydrocarbyl group having from 10 to 30 carbon atoms and one but not both of R 2 and R 3 may be a hydrogen atom,
or a salt thereof.
