An apparatus for manufacturing a porous glass preform is provided to produce the porous preform having few air bubbles and foreign substances even when a large-size porous preform is manufactured. An apparatus for manufacturing a porous glass preform supplies a raw material for glass, an inflammable gas, and a combustion-aiding gas to a burner, and deposits glass particles produced in an oxyhydrogen flame to make the porous glass preform. A clean air passed through a filter(12) is supplied to an air distribution container(8). The clean air is introduced into a reaction chamber(1) from many outlets of the air distribution container through many air intakes mounted on a wall of the reaction chamber. Further, the reaction chamber and the air distribution container are separated by a slide rail and a roller.
