PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate highly accurate range images on target subjects and generate range images in a short time by accurately detecting the target subjects without having to increase the size or cost of the apparatus. SOLUTION: A camera 10 is provided with two imaging parts PA and PB. Images formed by light in visible wavelength range are captured from the imaging part PA and the imaging part PB to generate a range image A of the images through the use of a stereoscopic matching method. The imaging part PB can capture images formed by infrared light. Infrared images formed by infrared light irradiated to and reflected at a subject from an infrared irradiation part 18 are captured to generate a range image B through the use of a TOF method. The range image B is first generated through the use of the TOF method to detect a principal subject by the range image B.
