PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To arbitrarily adjust color balance after the event while suppressing occurrence of arc jump in a DC system high voltage discharge lamp. SOLUTION: The image projection system includes: the DC system high voltage discharge lamp; a rotary color filter for color separation; an optical element; and a synchronous signal generating device that detects rotations of the color filter and generates a synchronous signal. The synchronous signal generating device generates a synchronous signal composed of a plurality of on-off patterns synchronizing with the rotations of the color filter. A boost pulse current is applied so as to overlap the direct current of the high voltage discharge lamp in synchronization with at least one specific color segment among a plurality of color segments composing the color filter. In addition, a pulse current for color balance adjustment the current value of which is smaller than that of the boost pulse current is applied so as to overlap it in synchronization with color segments except the color segment to which the boost pulse current is applied and the color segment following this color segment.
