PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an MMP-8 inhibitor, to improve various symptoms of diseases induced by production or increased activity of MMP-8, and to provide a prophylaxis or a therapy for the diseases. SOLUTION: A novel finding that cysteines (e.g. L-cysteine) inhibit matrix metalloproteinase-8 has been obtained. The matrix metalloproteinase-8 inhibitor contains the cysteines as active ingredients. A prophylactic or therapeutic composition for periodontal diseases in diabetic patients or persons with impaired glucose tolerance contains the matrix metalloproteinase-8 inhibitor.
