PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for cooling an iron shell on a furnace body of a converter, which inhibits the deformation of the iron shell on the furnace body of the converter and thereby extends the life of the converter, and to provide a device therefor. SOLUTION: This method for cooling the iron shell on the furnace body of the converter comprises the steps of: determining a relationship between the temperature and the yield strength of a material used in the iron shell on the furnace body of the converter; determining a relationship between the actual temperature of the iron shell on the furnace body of the converter, and the stress generated in the iron shell on the furnace body; and cooling the iron shell on the furnace body so that the temperature of the iron shell of the furnace body during the operation of the converter can be in a range of temperature (350°C or higher) at which the stress is not higher than the yield strength. Since the stress acting on the iron shell on the furnace body of the converter does not exceed the yield strength, the iron shell on the furnace body of the converter is not plastically deformed by excessive cooling. Accordingly, the plastic deformation of the iron shell on the furnace body of the converter is inhibited, and the life of the converter can be extended. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
