An apparatus and a method for controlling warming up of a machine tool spindle are provided to stabilize thermal displacement of a spindle head in a short time by allowing warming up of a spindle to be automatically varied according to a command of a worker. An apparatus for controlling warming up of a machine tool spindle comprises a fourth timer(48) that determines if a predetermined spindle stop time has passed. A second timer(44) rotates a spindle at a first speed after the spindle stop time. A third timer(46) rotates the spindle at a second speed faster than the first speed after the time of the second timer passes. A first timer(42) rotates the spindle at a third speed faster than the second speed after the time of the third timer passes. The first speed corresponds to 10%-20% of the maximum rotating speed of the spindle. The second speed corresponds to 21%-40% of the maximum rotating speed of the spindle. The third speed corresponds to 41%-60% of the maximum rotating speed of the spindle.
