PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To locally test a protocol of a network. SOLUTION: A protocol tester 42 is coupled between network elements 12 and 14. A signal processing block 48 receives data via an input terminal 46. A protocol decoder 50 decodes data and a bit error rate measuring instrument 52 measures a bit error rate of data. A trace file 54 records processing results of the blocks 50 and 52. A controller 62 displays the processing results of the blocks 50 and 52.
