<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure smooth movement of a piston rod and suppress the wear of a rod seal by forming a backup mechanism which pushes the rod seal against the piston rod to generate backup force independently of hydraulic pressure. <P>SOLUTION: In this cylinder device, the piston rod 2 has one end connected to a piston in a cylinder 1 filled with oil liquid and the other end inserted through a seal means 3 provided at the opening end of the cylinder 1 and extending to the outside of the cylinder. The seal means 3 has the rod seal 5, and the backup mechanism 21 for pushing the rod seal 5 against the piston rod 2. The backup mechanism 21 uses an annular inclined wall 24 formed on a seal cap 12 for giving elastic deformation to a ring elastic body 23 which is provided on the upper face of a ring supporting plate 22 held between a rod guide 11 and the seal cap 12 to apply backup force to the rod seal 5.
