PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce fluctuations of torque associated with the switching of piston motion, and alleviate or eliminate torque shock. SOLUTION: At the time of request T0 for switching from a second piston motion placing emphasis on sound vibration to a first piston motion placing emphasis on efficiency, a target intake-air flow tQ is changed by a predetermined variation width dQ so that fluctuations of torque associated with the switching of the piston motions are offset. Then in accordance with a change in a real intake-air flow Qe which occurs lagging behind the change in the target intake-air flow, the piston motion is switched stepwise on a cylinder-by-cylinder basis.
