In general, this disclosure is directed to techniques for memory efficien t and low complexity adaptive variable length coding (VLC) of data for a var iety of applications, such as coding of digital video, image, audio, or spee ch data. In some aspects, the techniques may exploit properties of particula r sets of codewords to support very compact data structures. In other aspect s, the techniques may support low-complexity, adaptive encoding and decoding of binary sequences produced by memoryless sources.
