A trigger device for setting a downhole tool (100) includes a retaining m ember (26) that restricts the downhole tool from setting until it is properl y positioned within the well and a force acts upon an actuating member (12). The retaining member includes an extrudable material (27) that extrudes thr ough an orifice when the force acts upon the actuating member. The extrudasb le material is preferably one that moves at a known rate so that the amount of time necessary for the downhole tool to set is pre-determined.
