<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which a long recording medium on which a toner image is held is passed between a fixing roller and a pressure roller, thereby fixing the toner image to the long recording medium under heat and pressure, the apparatus being designed so as to prevent the temperature of the fixing roller from significantly decreasing during the operation of fixing the toner image, resulting the failure in fixing the toner image. <P>SOLUTION: When the temperature of the fixing roller 36 decreases, power is supplied from an auxiliary power source not only to the main heating member 39A of a heating means 39 but also to an auxiliary heating member 39A, thereby causing the auxiliary heating member 39A to generate heat. In addition, before the start of a printing operation, it is determined, from the temperatures of the fixing roller 36 and pressure roller 37 and a remaining quantity of power capable of being supplied by the auxiliary power source, whether or not a toner image can be fixed over the entire length of a long recording medium.
