PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a next start from becoming difficult when a starter switch is switched off after the first fuel injection is performed, in an engine starting method for starting an engine by, at start-up, performing first fuel injection after reversely rotating a crankshaft at a certain angle and thereafter performing first ignition after normally rotating the crankshaft. SOLUTION: When the starter switch is switched off before the first fuel injection is performed at start-up, the driving of a starter motor SG is immediately stopped. When the starter switch is switched off after the first fuel injection is performed at start-up, the driving of the starter motor in the normally rotating direction is continued until at least one exhaust stroke is executed in a cylinder to which air/fuel mixture is fed by the first fuel injection, and thereafter the driving of the starter motor is stopped.
