PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To satisfactorily prevent the incorrect detection of a development amount when the development apparatus is made compact. SOLUTION: The development apparatus comprises: a toner storing chamber for storing toner; and a development treatment chamber arranged with a freely rotatable toner carrier carrying and transferring toner to the latent image forming region in a latent image carrier. By providing the toner storing chamber with a toner remainder detecting means for detecting the remainder of the toner in the development apparatus body on the basis of a change in capacitance between the same and the toner carrier, the clearance between the toner remainder detecting means and the toner carrier is optimized, and stable image quality free from image defects caused by the incorrect detection of a development amount can be obtained.
