PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal halide lamp capable of performing near-infrared radiation sufficient for the light source of an infrared visually recognizing device for a long period of time by improving the maintenance rate of output of near-infrared rays in its lifetime, and an infrared night vision system. SOLUTION: This metal halide lamp is equipped with an inner tube 1 having a discharge space 11 in the inside of which a discharge space 14 is formed, a discharge medium filled in the discharge space 14 while containing a halide of metal having a light-emitting wavelength suitable for a near-infrared region, and an outer tube 5 to which at least one alkali metal is added. At least one selected from potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), and cesium (Cs) is suitable for the alkali metal added to the outer tube 5, and the total added amount is preferably not less than 500 ppm and not more than 20,000 ppm.
