PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital signal recording and reproducing method and device to inhibit illegal use of a signal recorded in a recording medium and a signal output to a digital interface even for copy-free digital broadcasting signal. SOLUTION: In first, second, third, and fourth information for protecting copyright, the first and the second information are added to a digital signal, the third information is input from a digital interface with a digital signal, a value of the fourth information is decided from combination of the first and the third information and recorded in a recording medium. The first information is used for controlling copy limit of the digital signal, the second information is used for controlling whether to protect it from illegal use, the third information is used for indicating about encryption, and the fourth information is used for controlling copy limit of a digital signal recorded in the recording medium.
