PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for determining a type of an aggregate which prevents a human error in the determination of the type of an aggregate, facilitates the detection of such an error, and can be used for monitoring a grain size in manufacturing an aggregate and so on. SOLUTION: In the method and apparatus for the determination of the type of the aggregate, the upper surface of the aggregate 7 is scanned by a distance sensor 8 which is arranged above the surface of the target aggregate 7 so as to face the aggregate 7 and detects distances from the aggregate 7 as aggregate distance data, and irregularities of the surface of the aggregate are detected by the continuous detection of a plurality of the aggregate distance data in order to determine the type of the aggregate.
