A system for detecting the position of a medical device and a position detection method for a medical device guidance system, which can accurately detect the orientation of a medical device. The system has a medical device (3) introduced into a subject, a magnetic field response section provided in the medical device (3), respond to a magnetic field by having a magnetization direction, and guiding the medical device (3), a magnetic field generation section (45) for forming a magnetic field in the subject, an orientation-detection-field control section (49) for causing a magnetic field generation section (45) to generate an orientation detection magnetic field for detecting the orientation of the medical device (3), a response detection section for detecting a response of the magnetic field response section caused by the orientation detection magnetic field, and an orientation calculation section (35) for calculating the orientation of the medical device (3) based on the orientation of the orientation detection magnetic field and on the result of detection by the response detection section.
