PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology to resume reading at an appropriate point of time even if the resolution of an encoder is inferior to a line internal. SOLUTION: A multi-functional apparatus stops and resumes a reading operation according to the free space of a buffer. Before suspending reading, however, a period of time elapsing between an input of an edge detection signal of the encoder and an input of a line start signal is measured by an N counter, and at the same time, the current position of a transferred object is detected by a position counter based on the edge detection signal. When a req_stop signal is transitted to a value of 1, an offset time wait_cnt is set (for example, set to N7) based on the period of time (N7) measured by the N counter, and a value (k) outputted from the position counter at this time is set as a resumption reference position. When resuming reading, the line start signal is inputted into a CCD line sensor when the offset time has elapsed since the point when the transferred object has arrived at the resumption reference position (k), and reading is resumed at this point of time.
