<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which is conveniently manufactured at a low cost, and which is excellent in viewing angle characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is characterized by having at least: a liquid crystal cell (10); first and second polarizers (12a, 14a) respectively disposed on both sides of the liquid crystal cell; an optically anisotropic layer (14c) between the first polarizer (14a) and the liquid crystal cell (10); and a half-wave plate (12c) of which the Nz value at 548 nm wavelength is nearly 0.5 between the second polarizer (12a) and the liquid crystal cell (10), wherein Nz=0.5+Rth(548)/Re(548), and in the equation, Rth(λ) and Re(λ) are respectively a retardation (nm) in the thickness direction and a retardation (nm) in the plane at λ nm wavelength. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
