[Class 97 (i)] The film frame in the gate is illuminated piecemeal, during the projection interval, by a narrow elongated beam of light moved relatively to it. The invention is applicable to intermittent or continuous feed projectors. In the intermittent feed projector, shown in Fig. 1, the film 19 in the gate 18 is illuminated by a linear light source 10 an image of which is formed on the film by lenses 12, 13, 16, 17 and pivoted mirrors 14, 15. The mirrors are oscillated in opposite directions so that the image of the light source is swept across the film in the gate. The movement may be of saw-tooth form, the light beam being interrupted during the flyback periods by a shutter 21. A number of complete mirror oscillations may take place while each frame is at the gate, the film being fed during fly-back periods. Alternatively, successive sweeps of the light beam may be in opposite directions. In one form of continuous feed apparatus a pair of mirrors, similar to 14, 15, is used as an optical compensator between the film and screen, the image of the light source being focused in a fixed position at the gate. In further forms, the light source image is swept across the gate, at frame' frequency in a direction opposite to the film movement. In one such construction, one only of the optical compensator mirrors is given a saw-tooth oscillation at twice frame frequency. The two adjacent projected pictures which would otherwise be produced are brought into coincidence by superimposing on the mirror movement, or imparting to the other mirror, a square wave oscillation. Another continuous feed projector is shown in Fig. 5. A plate 52 with slits 61, 62, 63 is mounted near the film. The central slit is illuminated by a system, including mirrors 44, 48. A mirror 45 is oscillated at frame frequency between two positions in which the slits 61, 63 are illuminated respectively. Specification 522,545, [Group XL], is referred to. |
