PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an austenitic free-cutting stainless steel which acquires improved machinability by having MnS with a necessary size formed therein while having the quantity of S to be added controlled to be small, and can satisfactorily solve a problem that anisotropy occurs in characteristics of the steel, by making MnS extended in a rolling direction in a rolling step. SOLUTION: The austenitic stainless steel has a composition comprising, by mass, 0.01 to 0.20% C, 0.10 to 2.00% Si, 0.80 to 2.50% Mn, 0.10% or less P, 0.10 to 0.40% S, 5.0 to 15.0% Ni, 15.0 to 25.0% Cr, 0.01 to 0.10% Te, 0.003 to 0.010% B, 0.006 to 0.030% O, 0.050% or less N, and the balance Fe with unavoidable impurities, while satisfying the following expressions (1) to (3): Expression (1): 3.0≤[Mn]/[S]≤15.0; Expression (2): 0.10≤[Te]/[S]≤0.50; and Expression (3): 10≤[S]/[O]≤40.
