<p>There is provided an optical perturbation sensing system, including a probing beam (4) incident on a medium (6) with perturbations, a sensing beam redirected from the medium (6) and incident onto a surface of a photodetector (8), a reference beam (3) directed onto the photodetector (8) surface to form, with the sensing beam, an interference pattern on the photodetector surface, a phase patterner (9) forming at least two phase regions (10, 11) across its section, to generate different phases in different regions of the interference pattern, an array of photodetector elements (25), for detecting each phase region of the interference pattern independently, and a constructive combiner for constructively combining detected signals from the elements (25), to form a stronger detected signal with reduced intensity noise, reduced background noise, and reduced sensitivity to phase drifts. A method for detection of perturbations in a medium is also provided.</p> |
