The invention relates to a method and an arrangement of devices for proce ssing mail items (10) in a postal transportation and mail distribution syste m. According to the invention, information (11) of a mail item (10) is read into a reading device (31) in a first mail distribution center (30), the inf ormation clearly identifying the mail item. By checking the recipient data i n a database (4) it is verified whether a registered recipient has rerouting instructions of the mail to an electronic post office box system. If this i s the case, the information clearly identifying the postal item (10) is assi gned a destination and the mail item is transported to a second mail distrib ution center within the region of this post office box system (20). The reco rded data is transmitted to a data processing unit (52) in the second mail d istribution center (50). The mail item is sorted according to the destinatio n, and information regarding the change of address of the mail item (20) is sent to a mobile device (60) of a deliverer.
