PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic watermark embedding method/apparatus and electronic watermark detecting method/apparatus in which a bit plane in which an electronic watermark is embedded can be surely specified. SOLUTION: The electronic watermark embedding method is a method to be implemented for image data in accordance with a configuration at an electronic watermark embedding side and includes the steps of embedding ID information indicative of a bit plane to embed an electronic watermark; and embedding data in the bit plane specified by the ID information. The electronic watermark detecting method is a method to be implemented for image data in accordance with a configuration at an electronic watermark verifying side and includes the steps of extracting ID information embedded in image data according to the electronic watermark embedding method and specifying the bit plane in which the data are embedded, and extracting the data from the specified bit plane.
