PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detector of a mercapto group-containing substance having high discrimination properties with respect to the mercapto group-containing substance such as methyl mercaptan, hydrogen sulfide, or the like and capable of detecting the mercapto group-containing substance with high sensitivity. SOLUTION: The detector of the mercapto group-containing substance includes: a reaction part for reacting a fluorescent substance, which has a fluorescent function group to which a maleimide group is bonded directly or through another functional atom group and is increased in its fluorescence yield by the reaction with the mercapto group-containing substance, with the mercapto group-containing substance; a light source for irradiating the reaction product of the fluorescent substance and the mercapto group-containing substance with exciting light; and a fluorescence detection part for detecting the fluorescence emitted from the reaction product to output the electric signal corresponding to the intensity of the fluorescence.
