摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new photodetector and a new light detection method capable of detecting feeble light, such as single photons. SOLUTION: The photodetector comprises a light-receiving part including a photoreceptor comprising quantum dots and a first electrode forming tunnel junctions with the quantum dots; and a photodecting part that includes a single-electron transistor jointed to the first electrode of the light-receiving part. The photodetection is performed, in such a way that the photodetector is configured with the electrode being connected to the gate section of the single electron transistor via a capacitor; light is received by the photoreceptor; electrons generated by excitation due to the light reception of the photoreceptor is transitioned to the first electrode forming tunnel junctions with the quantum dots; the gate voltage of the single electron transistor is varied; and the variations in the current flowing in the single-electron transistor is detected.
