A light emitting apparatus has a light source for emitting short waveleng th light. A down conversion material receives and down converts at least som e of the short wavelength light emitted by the light source and back scatter s a portion of the received and down converted light. An optic device adjace nt the down conversion material at least partially surrounds the light sourc e. The optic device is configured to extract at least some of the back scatt ered light. A sealant substantially seals a space between the light source a nd the optic device.
