PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner capable of maintaining heating starting performance even in a very low temperature condition and of stopping operation without giving any uncomfortable feeling. SOLUTION: A bypass circuit having a refrigerant heater is arranged in a heat pump type refrigerant cycle connecting a compressor, a four-way valve, an indoor heat exchanger, a pressure reducer, and an outdoor heat exchanger via a refrigerant circuit. In terminating heating operation, operation of only the outdoor heat exchanger is continued for letting a refrigerant overheated by the refrigerant heater flow into the outdoor heat exchanger. In this way, defrosting operation is performed while maintaining a heating cycle even in termination of operation, in which defrosting of the outdoor heat exchanger is carried out, without switching the four-way valve, so that defrosting of the outdoor heat exchanger is carried out without giving any uncomfortable feeling such as refrigerant noise, and performance in the start of the next operation is ensured.
