PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector in which enhanced efficiency in the light use of the entire projector and a size reduction are achieved by improving the reflection characteristics of a cross dichroic prism. SOLUTION: The projector 1,000 includes: an illuminating device 100 that emits almost one type of linearly polarized light, in which polarization directions are substantially the same; a color separating light guide optical system 200; liquid crystal devices 400R, 400G, and 400B; incident-side polarization plates 410R, 410G and 410B; emission-side polarization plates 420R, 420G and 420B; the cross dichroic prism 500; a projecting optical system 600; and phase difference plates 430R and 430B disposed between the cross dichroic prism 500 and the emission-side polarization plates 420R and 420B respectively. If the maximum incident angle of light entering each of the liquid crystal devices isαand the assumed maximum angle of the projecting optical system 600 isβ, the projector 100 satisfiesα>β.
