PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recording apparatus capable of printing by using rolled paper to its limit when printing is performed in a continuous length, and a method for controlling the image recording apparatus. SOLUTION: The image recording apparatus of the present invention has a rolled paper presence detecting sensor for detecting the presence of the rolled paper and a hand paper-feeding opening for feeding a hand feeding paper as a recording medium in a conveying path from a rolled paper supporting part to a rolled paper feeding roller. In addition, the present invention has a printing controlling means for printing the rolled paper as the hand feeding paper fed from the hand paper-feeding opening when the rolled paper presence detecting sensor detects that the rolled paper is exhausted.
