PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quicken processing for an object area extracting system using self-similar mapping. SOLUTION: Contour extraction processing comprises the first step for setting a search reference block in a contour portion of a shape data, the second step for finding a similar block having a similar pattern of image data in each search reference block, and having a block size larger than that, and the third step for replacing a data with a binarized image in each search reference block, with a shape data of each corresponding similar block, and repeats prescribed times the third step to conform a border line of the shape data with a border line of the object. The contour extraction processing is repeated, and a contour position is correction-processed while contracting the image data, the shape data and the search reference block, in an early stage of the repetition.
