PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve unit for an internal combustion engine, which improves productivity of the internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: In this valve unit, a variable valve system 4 is provided with: a camshaft 15; a variable valve train 13 outputting valve drive output by receiving a cam 33a and continuously controlling the valve drive output in accordance with rotation displacement of a control shaft 14; an adjustment mechanism 70 capable of adjusting the valve drive output for each of cylinders; a sensor 16 for detecting rotation displacement of the control shaft 14; and retaining members 11a-11c for retaining the camshaft 15, the variable valve train 13, the adjustment mechanism 70 and the sensor 16, and is modularized so that adjustment of dispersion among cylinders and adjustment of sensor output can be performed individually. The variable valve system 4 after completion of adjustment of the variation among the cylinders and adjustment of the sensor output is fixed on a cylinder head 1 through the retaining members 11a-11c by exposing the sensor 16 to the outside of a rocker cover 3. Thus, when the variable valve system is installed in the cylinder head 1, adjustment of dispersion between the cylinders and adjustment of sensor output which cause stagnation of an assembly line are dispensed with.
