The invention provides methods and compositions relating to identificatio n and use of genetic information from the IL-I gene cluster - including the structure and organization of novel IL-1-like genes found within the IL-I lo cus as well as polymorphisms and associated haplotypes within these genes. T he invention thereby expands the repertoire of useful genetic information av ailable from the IL-I locus - which contains the previously-identified IL-l. alpha., IL-l.beta. and EL- IRN genes, for predicting IL-I associated phenoty pes (e.g. increased or decreased risks of insulin resistance associated path ologies) and for treating EL-I haplotype associated insulin resistance assoc iated pathologies.
