A tool (40) seating and imbalance test procedure rotates the tool spindle (22) about the centreline (23) placing a measurement section (5) under an orthogonal intermittent laser light beam (33) from transmitter to receiver and moving the tool and beam to cause monotonic variation of the separation between centreline and beam direction for measurement of relative positions whose differences are compared with prestored error values.
