A composition comprising ganhuangenin is provided to show excellent tyrosine inhibitory activity, melanogenesis inhibitory activity and anti-oxidative activity, thereby being effective for skin whitening. A skin whitening composition comprises ganhuangenin represented by a formula(3) as an effective ingredient, wherein the ganhuangenin is isolated from Artemisia Herba of Kang Hwa. The composition is formulated into tablet, troches, lozenge, suspension, powder, granule, emulsion, capsule, syrup or elixir.
