Nitrocyclohexane is purified from substances which retard the rate of catalytic reduction of nitrocyclohexane to cyclohexanone oxime, by refluxing the partially purified nitrocyclohexane with sulpurous acid or an aqueous solution of one of its acid or neutral salts (1-20% by wt. of nitrocyclohexane), followed by the separation of the nitrocyclohexane from the aqueous phase. The initial nitrocyclohexane is produced by the nitration of cyclohexane, and is partially purified by distillation. Acid or neutral salts of sulphurous acid mentioned in the Specification are sodium bisulphite, ammonium bisulphite, potassium bisulphite, sodium sulphite, ammonium sulphite and potassium sulphite. Three examples are given, illustrating the purification of nitrocyclohexane using aqueous sodium bisulphite solution, aqueous sodium sulphite solution, and sulphur dioxide plus water respectively.
