An apparatus and a method for requesting bandwidth allocation in a communication system are provided to perform the bandwidth allocation in consideration of a size of data which will be transmitted in an extended real-time polling service. An MS(Mobile Station) performs initialization(211). The MS waits as much as the next resource allocation interval(213). The MS measures a bandwidth(R_req(k)) necessary for data transmission during an interval of N frames and a bandwidth(R_alloc(k)) allocated during the interval of N frames(215). The MS determines whether a currently-allocated bandwidth exceeds zero(217). If so, the MS determines whether the R_req(k) is zero(223). If so, the MS transmits a zero bandwidth request message to a BS(Base Station)(225). If not so, the MS determines whether the R_req(k) is below than the R_alloc(k)(227). If so, the MS transmits a message for requesting bandwidth decrease to the BS(229). If not so, the MS determines whether the R_req(k) exceeds the R_alloc(k)(231). If so, the MS transmits a message for requesting bandwidth increase to the BS(233).
