[Class 135] The closure plug 50, Fig. 1, of a lift valve is formed with apertures A, B, C, Figs. 4, 5, 6, V-shaped notches 96, 104 of different depths being cut in the crowns of the apertures B, C, respectively. The logarithm of the flow through the valve is stated to be proportional to the lift. The plug is a sliding fit in a seating member 47 and is formed with a bevel 81<SP>1</SP> which coacts with a corresponding bevel in the seating. The position of the plug is controlled by a diaphragm 52 subject to fluid pressure on its upper side and to spring loading on its underside, the loading of the spring being adjusted by a nut 56. A plug according to the invention may be used in the valve 10, Fig. 2, controlling the steam supply to a liquid heater 15, the fluid pressure on the diaphragm being controlled by a relay valve 30 connected to a compressed air supply pipe 28 and to an exhaust nozzle 27 controlled by a hinged plate 25, the position of which is regulated by a block 24 adjustable on a shaft 23 connected to a Bourdon tube 18 connected by a capillary tube 19 to a thermostatic bulb 20 exposed to the temperature of the liquid.
